Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic (long-term) digestive disorder caused by gastric acid flowing from the stomach into the oesophagus. The lower oesophageal sphincter (LES) is a muscle that connects the stomach and oesophagus. Gastroesophageal reflux describes a backflow of acid from the stomach into the swallowing tube or oesophagus. This acid can irritate and sometimes damage the delicate lining on the inside of the oesophagus. Gastroesophageal reflux (also known as heartburn) occurs when contents from the stomach flow back up into the oesophagus. Occasional heartburn is normal.
